Metr. Saba explains that the saints correct spiritual error through humility and love, seeking the salvation of all rather than condemning others.

ENGLEWOOD, NJ — Metr. Saba (Isper) has reflected on the spiritual wisdom of St. Silouan the Athonite, emphasizing that genuine correction of religious error must be guided by love rather than condemnation. In his article “The Mind of the Saints,” published in connection with St. Silouan’s feast on September 24, the hierarch explores how divine grace transforms a person’s understanding of others and deepens concern for the salvation of all humanity.

Drawing on the account of St. Silouan’s life written by his disciple, St. Sophrony Sakharov, Metr. Saba recounts a conversation between the saint and a young archimandrite engaged in missionary work among non-Orthodox Christians. While the missionary criticized their beliefs as corrupt, St. Silouan encouraged him to acknowledge their reverence for Christ, the Mother of God, and the saints before gently explaining where their understanding needed correction.

The saint’s approach, Metr. Saba explains, did not mean accepting doctrinal error or abandoning the Orthodox faith. Rather, it reflected his conviction that condemnation closes hearts to the truth, while love creates an opportunity for genuine spiritual growth. St. Silouan’s constant prayer was that all people would come to know Christ through the Holy Spirit.

Metr. Saba further emphasizes that true knowledge of God comes not merely from intellectual understanding or accurate theological information, but through the Holy Spirit’s work in a person who humbly submits to God’s will. St. Silouan’s experiences of divine grace deepened his humility and love, teaching him that God alone determines how grace is bestowed. As the saint taught, the Holy Spirit grants the soul the ability to love even its enemies, and those who have not acquired this love do not yet truly know God.

Previously, the UOJ reported that Metr. Saba reflected on the Cross of Spiritual Struggle.
