Orthodox Church Welcomes 182 New Faithful in Morogoro
More than 180 people were baptized in Eastern Tanzania, marking another milestone in decades of Orthodox missionary work.
MOROGORO, TANZANIA — On Saturday, February 7, 2026, 182 people from Eastern Tanzania received Holy Baptism at the Missionary Center of Morogoro, continuing a tradition now in its 22nd year. The baptisms were held with the blessing of His Holiness Theodore II, Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa.
The newly illumined faithful were baptized by His Eminence Metr. Dimitrios, with more than 60,000 newly illumined baptized since 2004 in total. Following systematic catechesis led by Protopresbyter Cleopas Bachuba and six local priests, the catechumens approached the sacrament with reverence, order, and visible joy, receiving Holy Communion for the first time.
Among the baptized were 155 former Muslims, whose celebration reflected local African expressions of faith and thanksgiving. A communal agape meal followed, offered in memory of departed missionary hierarchs and benefactors who supported the Church’s work in Tanzania.
Previously, the UOJ reported that a mass baptism was celebrated at an Alexandria Patriarchate mission in Tanzania.
