Metr. Saba Issues 2026 Great Lent Message

ENGLEWOOD, NJ — In his 2026 Great Lent message, Metr. Saba called the faithful to embrace the Fast as a path of renewal, repentance, and spiritual freedom.
Addressing the archdiocese at the beginning of Lent, the Metropolitan emphasized that fasting is not merely abstinence from certain foods, nor an end in itself, but a comprehensive spiritual journey. True fasting, he wrote, reorders the believer’s relationship with God, self, and neighbor, leading from external discipline to inner purification. He stressed that fasting must be united to prayer and works of mercy, transforming personal sacrifice into love for the poor and those in need.
Metr. Saba also reflected on the challenges of modern consumer culture, noting that fasting restores balance and mastery over the self. He concluded by praying that the faithful may attain sincere repentance and the joy of Christ’s Resurrection.
