CHICAGO — Dormition of the Mother of God Romanian Orthodox Episcopate Parish in Chicago marked its 115th anniversary on Nov. 1 with a hierarchical Divine Liturgy celebrated by Abp. Nathaniel of Detroit and Bp. Andrei of Cleveland.

The celebration began Oct. 31 with a memorial service for the parish’s founders, benefactors, and departed members, followed by Vespers. Bp. Andrei officiated the services in the presence of Abp. Nathaniel.

During the Nov. 1 Divine Liturgy, Bp. Andrei delivered a homily on the Gospel reading from Luke 16:19-31, the Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus. He said wealth itself does not prevent salvation, but warned that comfort and abundance can lead people to ignore the suffering of others. He encouraged parishioners to respond to those in need with compassion and practical assistance.

At the conclusion of the service, Abp. Nathaniel thanked the parish priest, Fr. George Ursache, for his ministry and contributions to the community. Mr. Lucian-Ilie Stanica, Romania’s consul general in Chicago, and Vice Consul Ms. Loredana Hussar also attended.

The celebration continued with an exhibition of Romanian traditional costumes and cultural heritage. A communal meal followed the service.

Founded in 1911 by Romanian immigrants, Dormition of the Mother of God Parish, also known as St. Mary Parish, was the first Romanian Orthodox parish in the Chicago area. It has been served by Fr. Ursache since 2004.

Previously, the UOJ reported St. Dumitru Monastery celebrated its annual feast day in New York.
