UNESCO condemned reported damage to the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra after a strike that affected key structures within the World Heritage site.

KYIV — The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has issued a statement condemning reported damage to the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra following an escalation of fighting in Ukraine on June 15, 2026. The organization said the strike affected a site within the World Heritage property, one of the country’s most significant cultural and spiritual landmarks.

According to UNESCO, the attack reportedly caused substantial damage to both the exterior and interior of the Dormition Cathedral, a central structure within the historic monastic complex of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. The statement also noted that nearby heritage structures, including parts of the Lavra’s fortification system and the Ivan Kushnik Tower, were reportedly affected in the same incident.

UNESCO condemned attacks on cultural property and emphasized that such sites, along with educational institutions and protected personnel, are safeguarded under international law. The organization warned that damage to cultural heritage deprives communities of access to shared spaces essential for recovery, identity, and social cohesion. It also stated that it stands ready to assist authorities in assessing the damage and identifying urgent preservation measures within its mandate.

Previously, the UOJ reported that reserve officials seized a Lavra church amid an ongoing legal dispute.
