ISTANBUL — The Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate will convene on Friday, October 17, at 11:30 AM, to hear the appeal of former Met. Tychikos of Paphos, as reported by the UOJ’s Greek bureau.

Met. Tychikos was recently removed from the Paphos Diocese by the Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus. He has appealed to the Patriarchate to contest his deposition.

Panagiotis Lazaratos, Professor of Administrative Law at the University of Athens Law School, will lead Met. Tychikos’s legal team. Prof. Lazaratos has extensive experience in ecclesiastical legal matters before the Ecumenical Throne.

Prof. Lazaratos confirmed to the Cyprus News Agency that the invitation from the Patriarchate was sent to Met. Tychikos one or two days ago. Met. Tychikos will travel to Istanbul on Tuesday or Wednesday, while Prof. Lazaratos will arrive on Thursday evening.

Although procedural specifics remain unclear, both Met. Tychikos and Prof. Lazaratos will have the opportunity to address the Synod.

The Orthodox faithful in Cyprus have organized rallies to support Met. Tychikos.

Meanwhile, priests who speak out in his defense face suspension.
