Romanian Patriarchate Expresses Concern Over Lavra Damage
The Romanian Patriarchate expressed sorrow over reported damage to the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra and called for the protection of religious and cultural heritage.
BUCHAREST — The Romanian Patriarchate has expressed concern and sorrow following reports of damage to the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra in Ukraine, a major Orthodox monastic center and UNESCO World Heritage site. The statement came in response to the June 15, 2026 strike that affected the historic complex in Kyiv during ongoing military escalation in the region.
In its message, the Romanian Patriarchate emphasized the spiritual and cultural significance of the Lavra, describing it as one of the most important centers of Orthodox spirituality. The institution noted that damage to such sites represents a loss not only for local communities but also for the wider Christian world and humanity’s shared cultural heritage.
The Patriarchate added that places of worship and monuments of such historical and religious importance must be protected, especially during armed conflict. It also issued a prayerful appeal for an end to violence, the restoration of peace, the protection of human life, and the safeguarding of cultural and spiritual heritage affected by war.
Previously, the UOJ reported that UNESCO condemned damage to the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra after a strike.
