Images of damage to the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra reportedly helped strengthen support for Ukraine during G7 discussions.

EVIAN-LES-BAINS, FRANCE — Photographs showing damage to the Dormition Cathedral at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra reportedly played a significant role during discussions between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump at the recent G7 summit in France.

According to Politico, Zelensky presented Trump with images of the cathedral after it was damaged during a Russian strike. Several officials cited by the publication said the photographs appeared to make a strong impression on the U.S. president. The report also said French President Emmanuel Macron helped shape the summit’s diplomatic strategy, encouraging fellow leaders to emphasize the impact of the war on civilians, cultural landmarks, and religious sites.

The meeting took place amid efforts by Ukraine and its allies to secure additional international support. Following the summit, G7 leaders issued a joint declaration expressing “unwavering support” for Ukraine and endorsing additional defense assistance. The group also backed further sanctions against Russia. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney later described the U.S. position in the discussions as becoming “more realistic” regarding conditions on the battlefield.

Diplomats quoted by Politico said images of the damaged Lavra complex formed part of a broader effort to persuade Trump to support the final declaration. However, analysts cautioned that the agreements reached at the summit could remain subject to change as diplomatic circumstances evolve.

Previously, the UOJ reported that the abbot of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra decried damage to the Dormition Cathedral.
