St. Athanasius College Offers Trips to Alaska for Service and Adventure

The nine-day trips are being marketed as "part traditional mission trip, part pilgrimage."

Wasilla, AK—St. Athanasius College is organizing two service trips to the Antiochian Archdiocese' northernmost parish: St. Herman Antiochian Orthodox Church. Each trip is scheduled to run for nine days, five of which will be dedicated working days.

Fr. Matthew Howell, the rector of St. Hermans, explains that "one entire day in the schedule is set aside just for sight-seeing and pilgrimage activities, in addition to opportunities for short excursions after each day's work is finished."

The initiative hopes to draw Orthodox adults between the ages of 18-35, giving them an opportunity both to serve the Church, and experience Orthodoxy in Alaska. Fr. Matthew continues, "we thought it would be cool if young adults could do some work, connect with the Alaskan Orthodox saints and traditions, and also see some moose and caribou... Think of the trip as having three components: one part is service work like a traditional mission trip; another part is pilgrimage; and the last part is sight-seeing."
