Islamists Desecrate Orthodox and Presbyterian Churches in Sudan
Two Port Sudan churches were defaced with Islamic graffiti, highlighting rising anti-Christian hostility amid the Sudanese civil war.
PORT SUDAN — Two Christian churches in Port Sudan were vandalized on December 1, 2025, with red inscriptions bearing the Islamic shahada and other religious slogans, according to The Christian Post. Christian Solidarity Worldwide, a UK-based human rights group, reported that the Sudan Evangelical Presbyterian Church was marked with the phrase “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His messenger,” along with a Qur’anic verse. The nearby Orthodox church was defaced with the words “Allah is eternal.”
The attacks occurred in a central district of the city, directly across from a police station, yet authorities reportedly took no action. Members of the Presbyterian congregation opted not to file a complaint, fearing heightened tensions, and instead removed the graffiti themselves.
CSW chief executive Scot Bauer warned that rising religious hostility amid Sudan’s civil war is “deeply alarming” and stressed that Christians must be able to worship without fear.
Previously, UOJ reported that Pat. Theodore II of Alexandria and All Africa had signed a synodal letter urging peace in Sudan and other suffering African countries.
