Jerusalem Churches Launch Joint Restoration of Nativity Grotto
Jerusalem’s Christian Churches have united to safeguard the Grotto of the Nativity through a major restoration effort.
JERUSALEM — The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem and the Custody of the Holy Land have announced the imminent start of restoration works in the Grotto of the Nativity, the site venerated by Christians as the place of Christ’s birth. The project is being carried out in cooperation with the Armenian Apostolic Patriarchate and under the auspices of the Presidency of the State of Palestine, in accordance with the historic Status Quo governing the Holy Places.
The restoration will be undertaken by the Italian firm that previously led the rehabilitation of the Basilica of the Nativity, ensuring continuity in technique and respect for the sacred character of the site. Preparatory work has been completed, and the project will also include structural reinforcement in adjacent areas of the sanctuary.
Church leaders emphasized that the initiative reflects a shared Christian responsibility to preserve the spiritual, historical, and cultural heritage of the Grotto for future generations.
