Abp. Elpidophoros: Ukraine Will Shape the Future of Inter-Orthodox Relations
Abp. Elpidophoros said events in Ukraine will play a decisive role in shaping future relations between Orthodox Churches worldwide.
PHOENIX, AZ — As reported by UOJ-Greece, Abp. Elpidophoros of America said the future of inter-Orthodox relations largely depends on developments in Ukraine, emphasizing that political events there continue to shape ecclesiastical realities worldwide. Speaking at the annual Leadership 100 Conference, the archbishop addressed questions concerning strained relations with the Russian Orthodox Church, according to Orthodox Observer.
Abp. Elpidophoros noted that tensions between Churches have direct consequences for Orthodox unity, particularly in the United States, where overlapping jurisdictions and pastoral cooperation require careful coordination. He stressed that divisions at the global level inevitably affect local church life and witness.
He highlighted the ongoing work of the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States, which he said remains committed to safeguarding unity and cooperation among Orthodox Christians despite broader inter-Church challenges. The Archbishop expressed hope that a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine would open a path toward reconciliation between the Churches of Constantinople and Moscow.
Referring to Patr. Photius the Great, Abp. Elpidophoros observed that church affairs often follow political developments, noting that the terms of any future peace agreement in Ukraine could significantly reshape the ecclesiastical map of world Orthodoxy.
Previously, the UOJ reported that Abp. Elpidophoros joined in ecumenical prayer with an LGBTQ bishop.
