Metr. Arseny’s Hearing Postponed Due to Judge’s Illness
The trial of Metr. Arseny has been delayed after a judge’s illness prevented the court from considering an extension of restrictions against the Svyatogorsk Lavra bishop.
DNIPRO, UKRAINE — A court hearing concerning the case of Metr. Arseny of Svyatogorsk, vicar of the Svyatogorsk Lavra, has been postponed after the presiding judge was unable to attend due to illness. The hearing had been scheduled for Aug. 5 at the Chechelivskyi District Court of Dnipro.
The session was expected to address the continuation of preventive measures imposed on Metr. Arseny, as the current measure is set to expire on Aug. 11. Prosecutors had submitted a request asking the court to extend the Metropolitan’s restrictions in the form of night house arrest.
According to reports, the hearing was canceled after Judge Tatiana Vasylivna Bezruk went on sick leave. Prosecutors then appealed to the court president to appoint another judge who could consider their request regarding the extension of the preventive measure.
No new date for the hearing has been announced. Supporters of Metr. Arseny and the monastic community of the Svyatogorsk Lavra have asked the faithful to continue praying for the Metropolitan during the ongoing legal proceedings.
The case involving Metr. Arseny has drawn continued attention from members of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), who have expressed concern for the Metropolitan’s situation and the future of the Lavra community.
Previously, the UOJ reported that Metr. Arseny was granted daytime freedom as the court extended restrictions.
