Patr. Bartholomew Departs for Week-Long Visit to Great Britain
Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew began a week-long visit to Great Britain that includes a meeting with King Charles III, university engagements, and Orthodox liturgical services.
LONDON — Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew departed Constantinople on September 14, 2026, for a week-long visit to Great Britain that will include meetings with King Charles III, university appearances, and services at Orthodox institutions.
During his visit, the Patriarch is scheduled to meet privately with King Charles III at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. On September 15, he will preside at the Divine Liturgy at the Holy Cathedral of Hagia Sophia in Bayswater, London, where Abp. Nikitas of Thyateira and Great Britain will celebrate his name day.
Patr. Bartholomew will also receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Chichester and deliver an address at the University of Oxford. His schedule includes a visit to the Holy Patriarchal and Stavropegic Monastery of St. John the Baptist in Essex.
On Sunday, September 20, the Ecumenical Patriarch is scheduled to celebrate the Divine Liturgy at the Essex monastery. The visit will conclude a series of public, academic, and ecclesiastical engagements during his stay in Britain.
The patriarchal entourage includes Metr. Demetrios of Gero Prigiponnisos, Metr. Maximos of Silyvria and Metr. Ioakeim of Lambis, Syvritos and Sfakia, as well as Great Ecclesiarch Aetios, Dcn. Eulogios Tsatsas, Nikolaos-George Papachristou, and Panagiotis Grafiadelis.
Metr. Emmanuel of Chalcedon was appointed Patriarchal Commissioner during Patr. Bartholomew’s absence and accompanied him to the city airport together with Grand Archdeacon Alexander.
Previously, the UOJ reported that the Ecumenical Patriarchate canonized six Athonite elders, including four Romanians.
