The Romanian Patriarchate voiced concerns about Bucharest Pride while urging Orthodox Christians to respond with prayer, respect, and peaceful witness.

BUCHAREST, ROMANIA — The Romanian Patriarchate has issued a statement expressing concern over the organization of a parade in Bucharest dedicated to promoting diversity in sexual orientations, while urging Orthodox Christians to respond to social disagreements with prayer, peace, and respect for human dignity.

In its statement, the Patriarchate reiterated the Orthodox Church’s teaching that the family is founded on the marriage of a man and a woman and is oriented toward the raising of children. Church officials described this understanding of family life as a divine blessing and a cornerstone of both community stability and the formation of future generations. The statement said that public events promoting alternative models may be viewed critically from the perspective of Orthodox teaching.

The Patriarchate also argued that public demonstrations such as Bucharest Pride could contribute to what it described as confusion regarding spiritual values at a time when Romanian society faces demographic and social challenges. Church leaders framed their concerns within the broader context of preserving traditional Christian teachings and social cohesion.

At the same time, the statement emphasized that Orthodox Christians should reject hostility, insults, and violence. The Patriarchate stressed that offensive speech and denigration are incompatible with the Gospel and called on believers to treat every person with respect. It concluded by encouraging clergy and laity to strengthen prayer and cultivate Christian values within families, parishes, and society.

Previously, the UOJ reported that Alex Ovechkin declined a Pride Night display along with several Capitals teammates.
