Switzerland and UNESCO have committed nearly $1.1 million to restore the Lavra’s Dormition Cathedral as the historic monastery marks its 975th anniversary.

KYIV — As reported by UOJ-Ukraine, Switzerland and UNESCO announced nearly $1.1 million in funding for restoration work on the damaged Dormition Cathedral at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra during celebrations marking the monastery’s 975th anniversary.

UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany said the organization has provided $100,000 to begin restoration work. Switzerland also transferred $232,000 to UNESCO to prepare documentation and materials needed to repair the cathedral’s roof.

Swiss Federal Council delegate for Ukraine Jacques Gerber announced an additional $750,000 in Swiss funding for the restoration. The immediate goal, he said, is to work with UNESCO to prepare the historic cathedral for the coming winter while preserving the sacred site for future generations.

The funding announcements came during an Aug. 15 event at the Lavra, one of Ukraine’s most significant religious and cultural landmarks. The Dormition Cathedral has suffered damage during the ongoing war, prompting efforts to restore the building.

Previously, the UOJ reported that Greece pledged restoration assistance for the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.
