U.S. Catholic Priest Converts to Orthodoxy

Previously, Fr. Sebastian Carnazzo was a priest of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church.

SAN FRANCISCO — The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese has received Fr. Sebastian Carnazzo through incardination, marking his formal reception into the Orthodox Church, according to a report from the Orthodox Times.

Previously a prominent Eastern Catholic (or Uniate) priest, Carnazzo served as pastor of St. Elias Melkite Parish in San Jose, California. He was known for his biblical scholarship, lectures, and contributions to Catholic education.

A father of seven and former seminary instructor, he had built a reputation as a dedicated Eastern Catholic clergyman.

Under the pastoral oversight of His Eminence Abp. Elpidophoros of America, Carnazzo has been assigned as a part-time priest in the Holy Metropolis of San Francisco.

The decision, detailed in official GOARCH communications, reflects his discernment toward full communion with the Orthodox tradition.

Previously, the UOJ published an editorial on the difficulties facing Eastern Catholicism in the 21st century.
