As reconstruction advances, St. Theodosius Cathedral is steadily moving from recovery toward renewal.

CLEVELAND — Restoration work at St. Theodosius Orthodox Christian Cathedral has reached several significant milestones as crews continue repairing the historic church following a devastating fire in 2024, according to a recent update from cathedral officials.

One of the most important recent developments has been the completion of temporary protective roofing structures over the cathedral's north, east, and south sections. The temporary roofs will allow construction crews to continue working through much of the summer regardless of weather conditions and are expected to remain in place until September, when permanent roofing work is scheduled to be finished.

The restoration effort has now progressed beyond demolition and smoke remediation into the reconstruction phase. Workers are currently concentrating on rebuilding the south section of the cathedral while completing remaining repairs to the west roof, where the fire originally broke out. At the same time, construction has begun on the substantial square roof structure that will support the cathedral's iconic main dome.

Cathedral officials also reported encouraging news regarding the church's historic bell. After undergoing professional cleaning and inspection, the bell was found to be in excellent condition despite some discoloration caused by smoke exposure. A replacement striker will be fabricated to restore the bell's full sound.

Leaders of the restoration project continue to target the end of November for completion of the first phase of roof restoration work and expressed gratitude for the prayers and support received throughout the rebuilding effort.

Previously, the UOJ reported that Mt. Athos monasteries received $6 million for restoration projects.
