Bp. Timotheos Calls for Worldwide Prayers for Venezuela
Bp. Timotheos has called on Orthodox Christians worldwide to pray for Venezuela as clergy and faithful cope with the aftermath of a devastating earthquake.
MEXICO CITY — Bp. Timotheos of Assos has called on Orthodox Christians in Greece and throughout the world to pray for the people of Venezuela, where communities continue to struggle in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake that has claimed hundreds of lives and caused widespread destruction.
In a public appeal, the hierarch specifically asked for prayers for Metr. Iakovos of Mexico, Bp. Hesychios of Markiani, and the clergy serving in Venezuela, who remain engaged in pastoral and humanitarian efforts amid ongoing rescue operations. According to Bp. Timotheos, the regions of Caracas and La Guaira have been among the hardest hit, with emergency workers continuing to search for survivors trapped beneath collapsed buildings.
The bishop described the situation as exceptionally difficult, noting that more than one hundred significant aftershocks have compounded the fear and uncertainty already facing affected communities. While no injuries have thus far been reported among members of the Greek community in Venezuela, he said that many families are enduring severe emotional and material hardship.
At the same time, Bp. Timotheos expressed gratitude to Greece, Greek communities abroad, and humanitarian organizations providing assistance. Emphasizing the importance of spiritual solidarity, he conveyed a simple request from those suffering in the disaster zone: "The only thing we ask is that you pray for us, so that God may grant us strength, patience, and endurance amid pain and hardship."
He stressed that prayer and solidarity remain a vital source of hope and strength for those confronting the ongoing consequences of the disaster.
Previously, the UOJ reported that Patr. John X visited the earthquake-damaged Antioch Cathedral.
