Moldovan Church, Bessarabian Metropolis Leaders Discuss Avenues for Dialogue

CHIȘINĂU, MOLDOVA — Metr. Vladimir of Chișinău and All Moldova and Metr. Antonie of Bessarabia met during celebrations marking the 35th anniversary of the proclamation of Moldova’s independence, expressing their willingness to continue direct communication and deepen dialogue between their church communities.

The meeting took place Aug. 26 at the presidential residence, where a solemn gathering was held ahead of the Aug. 27 anniversary. President Maia Sandu, Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu, former deputies who voted for the Declaration of Independence in 1991, government officials, diplomats, religious representatives, and public figures attended the event.

The ceremony was held in the room where Moldova’s Declaration of Independence was adopted 35 years ago. Participants reflected on the events leading to independence and on the responsibility of later generations to preserve the values and freedoms associated with that historic moment.

During the gathering, Metr. Antonie also spoke with Bp. Anton Coșa of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Chișinău. The Metropolitanate of Bessarabia highlighted cooperation between the two church structures operating in Moldova, particularly in social and charitable work.

Metr. Vladimir and Metr. Antonie said they were prepared to maintain direct communication and seek ways to strengthen dialogue for the sake of good relations, peace, and responsibility in society. At the conclusion of the event, Metr. Antonie also met with state officials, members of the diplomatic corps, and representatives of public institutions and organizations.

Previously, the UOJ reported parishioners in Moldova forced their way into their historic church after authorities transferred it to the Romanian Patriarchate.
