Patr. Bartholomew Receives Honorary Doctorate From University of Chichester
Patr. Bartholomew received an honorary doctorate from the University of Chichester and urged graduates to approach faith, freedom, and modern challenges with spiritual responsibility.
CHICHESTER, UK — Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew received an honorary doctorate in Theology from the University of Chichester on September 16, addressing graduates on faith, freedom, religion, and the challenges facing contemporary society.
The honorary degree was conferred during the university’s graduation ceremony at Chichester’s Anglican Cathedral. In his address, Patr. Bartholomew reflected on his own education and ministry, saying, “Throughout my whole life, I have firmly believed that theology is the mighty arm of the Church.”
Speaking about the role of religion in modern society, the Patriarch said that “The human being is not merely a biological entity, nor merely a citizen of the world. He is a spiritual being with an exalted vocation.” He also argued that religious traditions remain important to understanding humanity’s cultural and spiritual heritage.
Patr. Bartholomew addressed the relationship between religion and peace, emphasizing the responsibility of religious communities to reject violence and promote dialogue. “Genuine faith is the most effective refutation of religious fanaticism and intolerance,” he said.
The Ecumenical Patriarch also discussed scientific and technological development, including artificial intelligence, while warning that scientific progress does not resolve humanity’s deeper questions concerning meaning, morality, and existence. He urged graduates to engage these questions as they begin their professional and personal lives.
Patr. Bartholomew argued that freedom cannot be separated from responsibility. He told the graduates that “The human being ‘honoured with freedom’ has a higher destiny than simply to do ‘whatever he wants.'”
The University of Chichester said the honorary doctorate recognized Patr. Bartholomew’s contributions to theological scholarship, interfaith understanding, environmental responsibility, peace, and human dignity.
