Catholic-Orthodox Dialogue Committee Meets in Hungary
Catholic and Orthodox theologians continued their dialogue on infallibility while planning further work before the topic reaches a full plenary session.
PANNONHALMA, HUNGARY — The Coordinating Committee of the Joint International Commission for Theological Dialogue between the Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church met from June 15–19 at the Archabbey of Pannonhalma, continuing efforts to advance theological discussions between the two Christian traditions.
The meeting was co-chaired by Cardinal Kurt Koch, prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity, and Metr. Job of Pisidia of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Participants gathered at the Benedictine monastery, founded in 996, where they were hosted by Archabbot Cirill Tamás Hortobágyi and the monastic community. According to the communiqué, members conducted their work in an atmosphere of prayer and reflection.
One of the notable developments during the gathering was the announcement of the first Hungarian-language publication of documents and texts produced by the Catholic-Orthodox dialogue. The collection, titled "Az Igazság Párbeszéde" (“Dialogue of Truth”), was welcomed by commission members, who described it as an important step toward making the dialogue’s work more accessible and encouraging its wider reception.
The committee’s primary task was the review of a revised draft text addressing the subject of infallibility from both theological and historical perspectives. Members engaged in extensive discussion and concluded that additional revisions and clarifications are necessary before the document can be presented to a plenary session of the commission. As a result, another meeting of the Coordinating Committee is expected to take place in June 2027.
Previously, the UOJ reported that a UOC bishop called for a statement on the boundaries of ecumenism.
