Ecumenical Patriarch Ordains New Metropolitan of Ankara at Phanar

ISTANBUL — On December 14, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew ordained Metropolitan-elect Gregory as the new Metropolitan of Ankara at the Patriarchal Cathedral of St. George in the Phanar.
The Divine Liturgy was concelebrated by several hierarchs, including Metropolitans Damaskinos of Didymoteicho, Anthimos of Alexandroupolis, Cyril of Imbros and Tenedos, and others.
In his pre-ordination address, Pat. Bartholomew praised Gregory's faithful service as Grand Protosyncellus, expressing confidence he would embody the "spirit of the Phanar" through tradition, pastoral care, and openness. He also emphasized ecclesiastical continuity and dynamic ministry.
Highlighting Ankara's diverse Orthodox community of over 10,000, the EP urged Gregory to promote coexistence and reject fundamentalism. He stressed the Eucharist and diakonia as core to the episcopal mission and encouraged ongoing theological engagement.
The service drew hierarchs, clergy, Archons, diplomats, and faithful, including many from Ankara. In response, Met. Gregory expressed gratitude and commitment to his new flock.
Last month, during the visit of Pope Leo XIV, the Turkish government signaled its openness to reopening Halki Seminary.
