Teen SOYO marked 45 years of Special Olympics ministry by bringing 125 athletes and dozens of volunteers together at Antiochian Village.

BOLIVAR, PA — Teen SOYO volunteers from across the Antiochian Archdiocese marked the 45th anniversary of the Special Olympics Multi-Sport Training Camp at Antiochian Village, where they spent Aug. 10–14 supporting 125 athletes.

The annual camp brought together 35 Teen SOYO coaches and 15 adult volunteers, who worked alongside Special Olympics coaches from throughout Pennsylvania. Athletes trained each day in sports including bocce, bowling, flag football, and soccer, receiving guidance and encouragement from the Teen SOYO participants.

One of the camp’s notable guests was Metr. Saba, who visited the athletes and volunteers. He also presided over Great Vespers with Litia-Artoklasia at St. Ignatius Church on Aug. 14 for the Feast of the Dormition.

Metr. Saba also met Loretta Claiborne, a nationally recognized Special Olympics athlete who has attended every Sports Camp since its founding 45 years ago. Claiborne celebrated her 73rd birthday during this year’s camp and told participants she would choose attending Sports Camp over an invitation to the White House.

The camp is sponsored by NAC Teen SOYO through contributions from parishes throughout the Archdiocese. On Oct. 18, Teen SOYO members will seek donations to fund the 46th annual camp in 2027.

Previously, the UOJ reported that Holy Trinity Monastery welcomed youth for its 2026 summer program.
