Patr. Kirill mourns the assassination of Ayatollah Khamenei, calling him “a man of profound religious convictions.”
MOSCOW — His Holiness Patr. Kirill of Moscow and All Rus’ expressed condolences following the assassination of Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. In a letter addressed to Masoud Pezeshkian, Patr. Kirill described the deceased as “a man of profound religious convictions,” and a spiritual and national leader of great strength of spirit and character.
The Patriarch conveyed his sympathy and support to Khamenei’s family and loved ones, praying that the All‑Merciful God would grant them and the people of Iran strength and fortitude to endure their grief.
Reactions to Khamenei’s death have been sharply divided. While state media showed official mourning, independent reports and footage from cities such as Tehran and Isfahan documented celebrations and dancing in the streets, with many Iranians expressing relief at the end of his nearly four decades of rule and hope for political change. Others cautioned that the moment brought uncertainty and fear as the country faced escalating violence and possible power struggles in the wake of his removal.
Previously, the UOJ reported that Patr. Kirill congratulated Metr. Sawa on 60 years of ministry.
