Utah Parish Celebrates Dome Raising for New Orthodox Church
A towering dome installation marks a transformative milestone for a growing Orthodox parish in Utah.
WASHINGTON CITY, UT — Hundreds of faithful gathered on March 14, 2026, for the raising of a massive dome atop St. George Orthodox Christian Church, marking a major milestone in the construction of the new church. The parish broke ground at the site in April 2025 and continues to build what leaders hope will become a spiritual landmark for the region.
Parish priest Mykel Giannakakos led prayers and blessed the 30,000-pound dome with holy water before it was carefully lifted into place. Speaking to parishioners, he emphasized the deep connection between beauty, truth, and Orthodox church architecture, expressing hope that the finished church would reflect the Gospel and transform the once-empty lot into something sacred.
The dome—38 feet in diameter and set more than 50 feet above the floor—was installed without issue. Architect Christ Kamages noted that such structures often inspire not only parishioners but entire communities, highlighting Orthodoxy’s enduring witness in the world.
